Design and Analysis of Algorithms

 

PRESENTATION

The purpose of this course is to provide all the notions, knowledge and skills relating to the design and analysis of algorithms necessary to operate in the field of green industrial engineering for sustainable development, also with reference to security aspects.

The course will cover the fundamentals of algorithm design and analysis (computational complexity, algorithm correctness, performance evaluation and the main algorithmic design paradigms), algorithmic techniques for engineering applications (graph algorithms, optimization methods, heuristic and metaheuristic approaches, resource allocation and scheduling), algorithms for physical security systems (access control, intelligent video surveillance, intrusion detection, event correlation, alarm management and decision support systems), cyber-physical systems security and intelligent monitoring (sensor networks, Internet of Things, distributed monitoring, data fusion, anomaly detection and edge computing), and algorithms for the protection of critical infrastructures (intelligent monitoring of industrial plants, smart buildings, energy systems and resilient infrastructures).

 

 

 

PROGRAM 

- Fundamentals of algorithm design and analysis: computational complexity, algorithm correctness, performance evaluation and the main algorithmic design paradigms.
- Algorithmic techniques for engineering applications: graph algorithms, optimization methods, heuristic and metaheuristic approaches, resource allocation and scheduling.
- Algorithms for physical security systems: access control, intelligent video surveillance, intrusion detection, event correlation, alarm management and decision support systems.
- Cyber-physical systems security and intelligent monitoring: sensor networks, Internet of Things (IoT), distributed monitoring, data fusion, anomaly detection and edge computing.
- Algorithms for the protection of critical infrastructures: intelligent monitoring of industrial plants, smart buildings, energy systems and resilient infrastructures.

EXAM FORMAT

The exam consists of two written tests, with an appropriate rest interval between them.

The first test, lasting 45 minutes, consists of one extended open-ended question.

The second test, lasting 45 minutes, consists of 10 short open-ended questions (the space available for each answer is limited and indicated on the exam sheets themselves, which will be handed out at the beginning of the test).

An oral exam, if applicable, is at the discretion of the instructor or upon the student's request. If the number of students is not large, both tests may be held on the same day.

Students are required to bring an identity document and a calculator to perform calculations (it is strictly forbidden to use a mobile phone calculator; phones must be left at the entrance of the classroom, in a secure and supervised area, together with backpacks, bags and anything else not indicated and authorized). The calculator must not be a programmable type and/or contain data relevant to the exam topics, and may be used only if the test includes exercises requiring numerical calculations. The exchange and/or lending of calculators between students is strictly forbidden during the test in which their use is permitted.

During the exemption tests, consulting books, course notes, handouts, etc. is strictly forbidden, on penalty of the test being voided; these materials must be left in backpacks, bags, etc. as indicated above.

The sheets required for the exemption tests (both for the formal submission and for calculation notes, etc.), duly marked, will be handed out in the classroom; it is therefore strictly forbidden to bring and/or use any other type of sheet. All sheets handed out to students must be returned.

During the exemption tests, students may therefore bring with them only pens for writing. The calculator must be left in backpacks/bags, etc., and may only be taken out and used during a test that includes exercises requiring calculations.

EXAM REGISTRATION

Registration is mandatory on the INFOSTUD website, and is allowed up to 2 days before the exam.

For the exemption tests, registration on INFOSTUD is not required; only an email notification to the course instructor is needed if registration during class is not possible.
